How Far in Advance Should You Book Movers in Chicago?

Most Chicago households should book movers four to six weeks ahead for a local move, and eight to twelve weeks for a long-distance one. A Saturday at the end of June can be gone two months out, while a Tuesday in February sometimes has openings the same week.

The instinct is to wait until the lease is signed and the keys are confirmed. The problem is that by the time everything feels settled, the good dates are taken and you are choosing from what is left over.

We are Collins Family Movers, family-owned and based on West Montrose Avenue since 2009. Our calendar tells the same story every year, and this guide covers how much lead time your situation actually calls for.

These ranges track broader industry guidance. moveBuddha's analysis of booking lead times recommends two to four weeks for off-peak local moves and four to eight weeks during peak periods, with interstate moves stretching to twelve weeks in summer.

Chicago sits at the demanding end of those ranges for reasons specific to this city.

Why Chicago Fills Up Faster Than Most Cities

Several things stack here that do not stack everywhere else.

Lease Cycles

Chicago leases overwhelmingly start on the first of the month, which compresses demand into the final week of every month. That happens twelve times a year, not once.

University Calendars

DePaul, Loyola, UIC, UChicago, and Northwestern collectively turn over tens of thousands of households in the same few weeks each August and again each May. Our student moving guide covers that crunch.

Building Restrictions

Many Chicago buildings limit moves to weekday business hours and require freight elevator reservations. That compresses demand into fewer usable slots than the calendar suggests, particularly downtown and along the lakefront.

Parking Permits

On blocks with permit parking or heavy curb demand, a CDOT permit needs its own lead time. If you book the crew two weeks out, you may already be too late for the curb space. Our guide to the Chicago moving truck permit covers that process.

Winter Unpredictability

A major storm can force a reschedule, and companies need slack in the calendar to absorb that. In February, that slack is easy to find. In June, it is not.

What Booking Early Actually Buys You

Your Preferred Date

The obvious one, and it matters most when a lease or closing gives you a narrow window.

A Cheaper Date

With lead time you can choose a mid-week, mid-month slot rather than taking whatever is open. Our breakdown of the cheapest day to hire movers covers where those savings come from, and our guide to the best time to move to Chicago covers the seasonal side.

Time to Compare Quotes

Three written estimates show you the fair range. People who call a week out take the first available number.

Time to Verify the Company

Illinois intrastate movers are regulated by the Illinois Commerce Commission and need an ILCC license number. Interstate carriers need a USDOT number you can check through the FMCSA SAFER database. Verifying both takes minutes, but only if you have minutes. Our guide to choosing Chicago movers walks through it.

Room to Arrange the Building

Freight elevators, loading docks, and certificates of insurance all take longer to sort out than people expect, especially in high-rise buildings.

A Realistic Chicago Timeline

Eight Weeks Out

Research companies and start collecting estimates. For a summer date or an interstate move, book now.

Six Weeks Out

Book the crew for a standard local move and get the date confirmed in writing.

Four Weeks Out

Start decluttering. Contact your building about elevator reservations, permitted move hours, and insurance requirements.

Three Weeks Out

Apply for a CDOT parking permit if your block needs one. Order packing supplies if you are handling that yourself.

Two Weeks Out

Transfer utilities. Confirm crew size and arrival window with your mover.

One Week Out

Post no-parking signs if you have a permit. Pack a first-night box with bedding, chargers, toiletries, and a change of clothes.

Move Day

Walk through with the crew before loading and again before they leave.

When You Need Even More Lead Time

Add two to four weeks to any of the above if any of these apply:

  • You need full packing service as well as the move
  • You are moving a piano, safe, or oversized artwork
  • Your building requires a certificate of insurance
  • You are relocating an office and need it done over a weekend
  • Your date falls in the last week of a summer month
  • You are moving into or out of a high-rise with restricted elevator hours

Commercial moves in particular need six to eight weeks minimum, and longer if the whole thing has to happen outside business hours. Our Chicago office moving guide covers the sequencing.

Booking a Last-Minute Move

Sometimes the timeline is not yours. A closing moves, a lease falls through, a job starts sooner than planned.

You can still get a good crew if you stay flexible.

  • Ask about mid-week and mid-month dates first
  • Be flexible on the arrival window rather than requesting a specific hour
  • Consider labor-only help if you can handle the truck yourself
  • Call established local companies as well as the national names
  • Do not skip license verification, even under time pressure

That last point matters most. Rushed customers are exactly who bad operators look for. A company that cannot produce an ILCC or USDOT number on the first call is not the solution to your scheduling problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book movers in Chicago?

Four to six weeks for a local move and eight to twelve weeks for long distance. Off-peak studio and one-bedroom moves can often be booked two to three weeks out.

When is peak moving season in Chicago?

May through September, driven by lease cycles, school calendars, and university turnover. Weekends and the final week of any month are the busiest dates year round.

Can I book Chicago movers two weeks out?

Often yes between October and April, or for a mid-week date. Summer weekends and month-end dates are much harder to secure on short notice.

Does booking early save money?

Indirectly but meaningfully. Early booking lets you choose a cheaper mid-week, mid-month date and gives you time to compare three quotes rather than accepting whatever is available.

How far ahead should I book an office move in Chicago?

Six to eight weeks minimum, and eight to twelve during summer. Commercial moves need extra coordination around building access and business downtime.

What if my move date changes after booking?

Tell your mover as soon as you know. Most companies can shift a date with reasonable notice, though a change inside 48 to 72 hours may carry a fee. Ask about the reschedule policy when you book.
